A typical art education in the 19th century would begin with drawing from casts of Greek and Roman statues. That still means copying and printing them. The concepts, too, are based in the world view of that time. Each reproduction costs as much as your average art book by itself.

Many of the lessons found in examining and replicating these plates are used by contemporary artists in their work. Old style academic ateliers are springing up all over the barguw, and the pendulum is swinging back the other way, at least in drawihg quarters.

The Charles Bargue Drawing Course

Just finished my first drawing. I could have worded them somewhat better though, with hindsight. Secondly, Graydon has told me since writing this that they did chrales to have at least some of the plates included loose-leaf in the original size, but it was a no go with the publisher.

The Speed book was written at the turn of the century, so the language can seem a little difficult to modern ears. The book does not however work if you purchase it to collect dust. The Renaissance marked a return to the natural and idealised forms of classical Greek and Roman art, but now often in the service of the Church. Really is a challenge but as an artist all of my life, it is a wonderful challenge, your crit was fair, anmd I do agree about the pages would have been better loose for this prupose.

Drawing Course by Gerald M. Want to Read saving…. The Bargue Drawing course is not something that can appreciated with a cursory look. In fact, even artists that practiced a less objective form of visual representation, brague as Pablo Picasso, spent time studying from the Bargue Plates.

I can only do so much at one time, so my progress is glacial at best, but I’ve enjoyed trying drwaing reproduce the plates. The reading of the material is fast, but now the fun begins as I go back to replicate the drawings.

Graydon Parrish, one of the editors of the book, sent me a very nice email having read this review, and considering how critical I was, he was very polite.

I also found a web site where I was able to download copies a little larger than in the book. The results were really incredible — I can say with perfect sincerity that every single drawing that came out of those classes was excellent. The Bargue-Gerome Drawing Course is a complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth century drawing course.

An amazing approach to drawing. AWaichulis Anthony Waichulis I do think it would have been nice for the authors or publisher to at least offer a full size version of the lithos in pdf form. No trivia or quizzes yet. Michelangelo in bargeu was instrumental in this change of the perception of the artist.
